Determining the pH value

It is all a question of balance: the pH value determines how healthy the skin is.

The pH value is a marker for the stability and integrity of the skin’s natural acid mantle (around pH 5). Numerous factors, such as sebum, perspiration, lipids on the skin’s surface, enzymatic reactions, etc., play a role in determining the pH of the skin. The acid mantle is an important barrier feature, shielding the skin from bacterial infections and fungus and is the catalyst for countless enzymatic reactions. The skin’s pH value is affected by numerous factors. Ailments, such as psoriasis, and even natural ageing tend to shift the pH value in a more neutral direction. A neutral pH value can lead to lower resistance to infections, barrier function disorders and the spread of skin diseases.
