Sniff Test

The sniff test is a method for checking the effectiveness of a deodorant (protection against underarm odor). Deodorants change the body odor or delay the appearance of sweat odor. Deodorants should not be confused with antiperspirants, which additionally inhibit the secretion of sweat through active ingredients (e. g. aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH).

In order to avoid interactions of already used deodorants / antiperspirants with the product to be tested, our test design provides for a so-called wash-out and conditioning phase before the actual product is applied.

The application duration can vary between "once" and "several weeks". Depending on the specification (e. g. 8 h effect, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h), a cotton pad is stuck under the armpits for a defined period of time after the application time.

The cotton pad pick up the sweat smell of the volunteers and are evaluated by 4 trained sniffers on the basis of the VAS scale (based on the ASTM standard E 1207-14 "Standard Guide for Sensory Evaluation of Axillary Deodorancy").
